Over the next few weeks I’ll tell you what’s happening for Westside Culture Days by location. First up is Westbank Shopping Centre. The Centre will be at full capacity during September 26, 27 and 28 and it’s going to be quite diverse, dynamic, fun and active. Maybe we can even get even a chess/checker/crib match going too.
At each business listed the following artists and cultural groups will be in attendance, displaying or creating work on site Saturday & Sunday:
Blenz: Cosmos painter Aaron K Metz, Figurative artist Julia Trops, Felting artist Judith Mueller.
Just outside of Blenz: Fantasy and Henna artists Coralee Miller and Matthew Brown as well as local Yoga instructor/Mala bead artist Tanya Normandale
Also outside Blenz on Saturday, beloved musician Papa Thom will play and host fellow musicians including Theresa Bishop, James Judd, Rachel Layne and other guests.
Thanksgiving is coming, and so is (dare I say it) Christmas. Not far from Papa Thom the Food Bank will be on site and there is a surprise in store. I can’t say any more than that.
Lenetta Parry, Executive Director, Westside Community Food Bank said “(we are) thrilled to be a part of this wonderful, community event. We encourage everyone to come out and celebrate local art and culture and while in attendance make a donation to the Westside Community Food Bank. We cannot thank the organizers, local artists, musicians and community enough for their support.”
Momo Sushi: Whimisical artist Kirsten Petersen.
Off the Dock: Stone sculptor Alan Waidman, Willow sculptor Annabel Stanley, and jewellery by Cherie Sibley W.
Imperial Optical: Impressionist painter Jamie Morris.
Lammle’s: Expressionist painter Mimi Moylan.
Libertine’s: First Nation artists Janine Lott, Stewart Jacobs, Noll Derickson, Linda Lavelle, Lorraine Cornish, and Maggie Lynne.
Clothes Pin Laundromat: Painter Richard Jacobs.
TD Bank: New Moon Art Gallery owner and artist Linda Lovisa.
RBC Bank: Wildlife artist Cherie Sibley W.
City Furniture is finalizing their artist selection.
Local artist and dance mom Rebekah Wilkinson is organizing the following four pop up galleries which are sponsored by shopping centre property manager Bentall-Kennedy:
The Nations Gallery will feature WFN artists Pat Raphael, Holly Bob, Sheldon P. Louis, Judi Garner Neihaus, Tashina-Mae Raphael. Pat Raphael, coordinator of The Nations Gallery is donating a portion of sales from her work to rebuilding the Westbank Hall and that the gallery will also accept donations for this project. The All Artists Gallery will include works from all participating Westside artists. Julia Trops will have a gallery featuring her “Planting Seeds” artwork, and The Dance Gallery is joint venture of the two dance groups Fusion Dance Academy & Sarafanov Ballet Studio.
Through the entire weekend across the Westside, there will be a sponsored People’s Choice activity, where attendees discover and engage with the creative partners. The community will vote via ballot on their favourite artist to be awarded the People’s Choice. This award is very generously sponsored by both Blenz and Opus Art Supplies.
The Blenz People’s Choice prize is $250 cash and a $50 Blenz gift card. Ryan Paulson Blenz Marketing Manager says, “Latte art is a big part of who we are as a brand so we are extremely passionate about supporting our local arts community. With this award, we hope to bring out the very best in the participating artists so the entire community has a vibrant and inspirational experience at what promises to be an amazing event.”
In addition to the Blenz award, Aaron Metz, Opus Art Supplies manager said, “(we are) committed to supporting the local visual arts and as a way to thank everyone for making us the #1 place for art supplies we are offering a $100 Gift Card to this year’s People’s Choice Awards. ”
It’s not too late if you want to participate. All Westside businesses and artists are still welcome to join in on the weekend. Next week and the weeks after will be listing businesses and partners by location, so stay tuned!
This is a perfect opportunity to rediscover your community. Westside Culture Days will take place September 26, 27, 28 at various locations on the westside, more information can be found at http://www.WestsideCultureDays.com
